So I have a mass of wiring behind the non-working head unit in my car.

Can anyone help me figure out what is what and what do I need to remove to install an aftermarket head unit?

I'm shithouse with electronics (wiring and shit, not computers ;) ) But, I can tell you, you have the same Razo CF gear knob I have (had)

And I think you'd look a lot sexier in budgie smugglers than those shorts...

Raven do you have factory AMP???

if you dont have factory amp then it makes things easy. all you need is power and ground which you can tap in from ciggi lighter. if you will run your speakers through an aftermarket amp, then all you need to do is run RCA's from HU to amp.

but looking at the wires you have, the factory loom has been played with so a Metra loom is out of the question for you to use. and its kinda hard for me to tell you whats what from that pic.

your in SA ye??? if you can wait a few weeks, more then happy to do the HU install for you when im down :). but if you look somewhere here on the forums, there is a wire diagram to wire up a HU and tells you what colour wires you need,

Yes, I'm running the factory amp.

The loom has extra wires tapped into it via those quick snap connecters, and adaptor looms added onto the big main plug, which can be removed.

Other than that, its stock standard and I gotta have this installed by Friday next week as I'm going interstate and its a long drive.

i haven't heard of anyone yet achieving any kind of "success" with the factory amp. i'm going to play with mine soon though. i don't actively want to spend money on a replacement amp if i don't have to.

so if you want a quick fix, you'll most likely be buying an aftermarket amp as well. there's a fair few 5 channel's floating around to pick from. i saw a Cadence 4x100, 1x300 for something like $300 online, but i don't know if it'd fit under your passenger seat.

I've currently got an after market head unit (Kenwood BT900) connected to the factory Amp.
At first, I ran all speakers and sub off the AMP, but then decided to run speakers from the head unit and just the sub from the Amp. Sounds better this way in my opinion. This allowed me to adjust front and rear easier, and also use the Sub outputs on the head unit, to control the factory amp as if it was just any other sub amp. I've got pics and crap, just haven't uploaded em yet, as I'm currently building a sub box to fit under the parcel shelf. Hopefully I will have this close to being finished some time this weekend.

If you want pic's PM me ya e-mail and i'll send em though. I may even throw a vid on youtube of the current setup.
