I purchased a pre-converted car in Japan, had it chopped in two and brought in for parts (and the know-how) to convert mine, maybe this is the one you heard about?

I'm with you buddy. They build their cars light, which has its advantages on the track, with the pay off being a tinny car on the street. I quite often exclaim that her Silvia is "made out of balsa wood and crepe paper".

Anyways I'm sure you don't need me starting a Toyota > Nissan flamefest

Thank you. All cars coming in for compliance under the RAWS scheme need to be stock. So if you bought a car in as manual, you would need to convert it back to auto to pass compliance. Given this, it would more expensive to bring in a pre-converted car, then return to stock, then re-re-convert.

1: bullshiting about it
2: was ignorant and had an expensive surprise awaiting him at the compliance workshop (doubt it)
or
3:he has contacts in the compliance workshop.

Fair enough. I can only assume they did this to see how it was done, then either destroyed the car, or spent a heap of money reverting it back to a stock auto.
