I am about to do yet another oil change, and have to say that I'm still not sure I have been using the best oil.
Previously I have used Shell, Castrol and Nulon synthetic, but if anything I noticed the Shell was a bit thin a lot sooner and I started to get a touch of smoke in the old twin turbo.
Without pressing about change intervals (5k usually), this time I am doubling my input and going with Redline and a TRD filter.
(Great price on the oil from www.performancelub.com) ......... but still, freekin expensive compared to the others.
Have any of you with a VVT-i used Royal Purple, Motul, Redline, TWS etc, and what are your opinions?
Also, did you sus out filters based on science or price, and any observations?

According to my mechanic (who is a walking encyclopedia on all things Toyota) Penrite Synthetic is probably the best if not one of the best for the 1JZ.
They do use a bit of oil so don't be afraid to go up a grade if the kms are getting up there!

I have been using Royal Purple in the 10-40w and it seems excellent. not much oil loss or thinning and the car has a few Km's on it also.

I recently read a oil comparo article from Street Commodores (not that I regularly read the magazine). They compared a whole heap of synthetic oils on a "Falex Lubricity Tester" which gives results similar to the "Timken OK Load Rating Test", not sure what this means in real world terms but basically the machine lubricates a race with the oil of choice and a bearing is pressed against the race at increasing pressures. The two highest performers were Penrite Synthetic 5 (5W-60) and Royal Purple Synthetic Oil (10W-40), excluding Royal Purple R51 ($30/litre).
This test was only for a single property of the oil (film strength, important when adding big boost or big revs apparently), plus the article was advertised in a workshop that sold Royal Purple products (draw your own conclusions there). That said, it provided a real world measure and actually put some major brand oils to shame when their claims weren't backed up by their performance.
Issue 108 of March 06 apparently had the article.

I'm curious - what is the definition of a 'good' oil? Would it be the cheapest oil that meets the vehicle requirements?

I use the shell 5-40 synthetic stuff that comes in the silver bottle mainly because its available everywhere and cheap. Plus most places sell the 5L as well as the 1ltr so you dont have to buy two big ones. I'd use thicker but it doesent really matter since it gets changed every 2nd event or 3 months.

AL100, Welcome.
I had this hot little article in my posession not that long ago. I borrowed it off my brother to scan up onto the forums here and my friggin wife threw it out!!! I'm now in search of something valuable of hers to even it up, hehe.
That shit is so interesting & I was so keen to scan it up as there are alot of oil out there that is NOWHERE near as good as it's cracked up to be. IMO Motul is a big dissapointment and HIGHLY overated.
That particular Penrite and Royal Purple are the ducks nuts! I run Royal Purple in my wagon, and alot of people who run there cars at Eastern Creek ( Western Sydney International Dragway) do too.
I can't understand people cheaping out on oils, WTF?!?! Two things i never cheap out on, Food & oil used in my cars!
My brother saw an experiment of Castrol Magnatec & some additive called 'Royal Gold' something or rather, mixed with water, and the Royal gold stuff with water was a far better performer!
AL100, you wouldn't mind scanning that article up for us would you??
Cheers.
Phil.

I cant remember the exact details but they later revoked that article because a whole heap of experts came forward and shitcanned the article because the tests they ran were more in line with how gears would mesh together rather than bearing load and wear.
That said the only motul product I would use is their interior cleaner spray. Cause it smells nice.
